“I am” poem.
I am Judith Leyster,
I am a dreamer of far places,
I wonder if I could ever be at the sea,
I hear the sound of the windy wind,
I see the salty sea,
I want to be at the waving waves,
I am a dreamer of far places.
I pretend like I am on the moon,
I feel like I can fly through the sky,
I touch the stars at night,
I worry if there will ever be a night like this,
I cry because it is already becoming day,
I am a dreamer of far places.
I understand that this is my last,
I say goodbye,
I dream about a good afterlife,
I try not to cry,
I hope the world will be better,
I am a dreamer of far places.

For art class we had to answer some questions. The first question is if these answers tot these questions being different at any time? For each self-portrait, the artist must ask: what expression, posture, clothing, setting, colours, texture, style, and material best conveys the real me? The answer will be most of the time different, because nobody is the same so the answers aren’t the same either. The second question is about what do you think Van Gogh is saying to the viewer in this self-portrait? He wanted to tell us that he is a concentrated and hard-working person. It also shows us that he is bit shy because he didn’t paint it with his eyes focused to us. The third question we needed to answer is what do these changes do to the self-portrait and to your ideas about Van Gogh at that point in his life? My answer is that after his severe emotional crisis his live changed a lot, because now he used dark colours in the back and light in the face to show that he wanted to be the spot. His life became much more darker and more disappointing then before. The forth question is if you do find anything unusual about this picture of Gauguin? Click on the painting to see what happens when the colours change. My answer to this question is that in this painting he looks really tired and old, but when you click on the painting the green removes and then he again looks young and fresh. So only the green in the face changes the whole meaning of the painting. The next question is what would happen when the green in the painting fades to flesh tones? What I thought was that the painting changes from old and tired to fresh and young. How does it change your response to Gauguin in this self-portrait?
Now I think he is more human then in the first self-portrait. The almost last question is about an infrared photograph shows what is underneath the top layer of paint. What do you see? Well underneath the paint is an etch which was made before the painting. The last question was about if you think his statements fit with his self-portrait? And if it is superficial? I think This statement doesn’t fit with his self-portrait, because you can see de desperate feelings he had at that time in his self-portraits. It is maybe a bit superficial but nice to see.
Conclusion.
I came to the conclusion that artists make self-portraits to show their feelings. They also want to show what they thought of life and you can see in the portraits what they might do or did. They also made self-portraits to show much more clearly how they felt, because with just a photograph you don’t show the feelings.

Dear Niek,
I’m writing this letter to you because I want to show you my paintings. I have put a photograph of the paintings on the other paper. These two paintings I have painted in art class and I would like you to look carefully at them and give some comments. The paintings show my feelings at that certain moment in class. I think you can see how I felt at that moment. I will describe them for you.
The first painting (seen from left to right) I had made first in class. This painting shows me when I was painting this sort of style for the first time in life. I really disliked this kind of painting I think it is just ugly. But we had to paint it in art class. So I tried to do my best and eventually I’m quite proud because I think it turned out to be quite good. I didn’t get such a high mark but I’m satisfied. I will explain how I painted it. I started with drawing a ruff sketch how I thought it must be. As you can see on the right picture there are some lines from a pencil. After making the sketch I started painting the background. At first it didn’t went well and started over again. The second time it was already much better, as you can see. You can see I have used ruff brush strokes because I think this looks more dissatisfied. And at that moment I was dissatisfied because of painting impressionism. Then I started painting the clothes. The clothes are completely the opposite of the background. I really like this kind of clothes so I was wearing them that they but in art class I wasn’t so happy and that’s how the background became that dark. I’m satisfied with the clothes I painted. The colours aren’t mixed so much and it looks good. The next lesson I started painting the face. I really tried to paint some perspective in my face but it is very difficult to do. Eventually it turned out to be done correct and I think it looks good. I didn’t had time to do the neck and details.
The other painting isn’t finished yet. We didn’t had so much time and I had already started over again so I only got less time left to finish this painting.
